Trauma, be it physical, emotional or psychic, may be stored only to resurface, sometimes years later, as a pain, an anxiety, a behaviour or any number of problems created by the body’s method of compensation. Our goal is to teach participants to ’see’ differently, to think outside the box and to affect profound change through a global hands-on approach.
The substance of this course covers all aspects of trauma and injury, how they differ and their effect on the body/mind/spirit continuum. Using systemic evaluation, observation, listening, gait/movement analysis and dynamic anatomy, participants will learn multiple techniques to restore patients’ homeostasis. When these series of techniques are used in concert, they effect a profound change in the whole body. They are useful in treating back pain, generalized stiffness, numerous sequellae of MVA’s, head injuries and correcting postural problems to name a few. It is a “go to” solution when a new approach is required.. Individually they are each useful additions to any treatment eg shin splints, runners knee, TMJ problems, breathing problems, back pain, S.I joint pain and more.
EACH DAY BEGINS WITH DISCUSSIONS:
- TRAUMA and INJURY:
- Trauma vs. injury.
- Types of trauma: physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual
- Effects of trauma on: body, Self, family, community
- Vectors of force and their ramifications
- IMPEDIMEMTS TO MOVEMENT:
- Principles, concepts and laws useful in understanding trauma
- Myofascial chains especially relating to the core
- Nerve compression and entrapment
- Factors contributing to pain and/or dysfunction
Duration: 24 hours

An in-depth manual accompanies each Anatomy of Trauma© Module
To truly understand the hands, arms and shoulders one must view them as a whole, as wings attached to the torso and beyond. Spread your arms out as though you are flying and feel the movement in your body through all directions. You will feel movement in the scapula and the clavicle as well as tension in the attachment of the SCM. If you stand very straight and let your arms hang heavily by your side you will discover that the arms hang from the occiput, the temporals and the mandible; stretch them above your head and the pull will be felt through the chest to the iliac crest, the pubis and the sacrum; stretch them out to the side and you will feel the connection through the latissimus dorsi to the iliac crest and through pectorals to the sternum and on to the diaphragm. Rarely can a problem be treated in the area of pain alone. With that in mind, students are taught a ‘global approach’ concept of treatment called TraumaPractik.
ANATOMY of TRAUMA© workshops emphasize thinking outside the box and viewing the body as much more than the sum of its parts. The question “What am I really looking at?” is key in assessing each individual and devising the appropriate treatments. The whole person, their history, posture, gait, culture, environment, work, family and beliefs are all important considerations in uncovering the source of pain. TraumaPractik is a unique approach to solving core issues.
EACH DAY BEGINS WITH DISCUSSIONS:
- DISCUSSION of INJURY and TRAUMA (numerous related papers will be advised reading)
- Types of trauma (physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual)
- Differences between injury and trauma (fight, flight, freeze)
- Nature of force
- Ramifications of trauma from the individual, local and global perspective.
- Eight steps of healing
- REVIEW of PRINCIPALS, CONCEPTS and LAWS useful in understanding injury and trauma.
- Principals:
- ischemia, trigger point, nerve compression/entrapment, postural distortion, and biomechanical dysfunction, morphogenesis/stasis/kinesis
- Laws:
- Pflugers, Arndt-Shultz, Davis, Wolff, Hooke, Hilton, Newton, Herring
- Concepts – a brief overview of:
- Osteopathic Concepts: the body as a unit, structure and function are reciprocally inter-dependent, the body has a system of autoregulation, an healthy body has an inherent ability to defend and repair itself
- Bio-tensegrity and it’s vital role in every aspect of the human body and of life itself
- Epigenetics and its relevance in health
- Principals:
As well, we’ll consider numerous paradigms (Einstein’s theory of relativity, Darwin’s laws, Heizenberg’s uncertainty principle, Burr’s holographic concept) and how they apply to health and healing.
Duration: 27 hours
[clear]What You Will Learn:
- Numerous techniques for the release of the fascia, muscles, and joints, of nerve entrapment and compression, of scar tissue and other restrictions.
- These techniques are excellent for:
- back and hip pain,
- shin splints,
- runners knee,
- IT band issues,
- sciatica,
- numerous pelvis issues and gait imbalances.
- Needless to say, releasing the lower body also affects the whole…profoundly!
An in-depth manual accompanies each Anatomy of Trauma© Module
Anyone who has built or owned a house understands the value of a healthy foundation. Defects therein can be very costly. So it is with our bodies. In humans, the evolutionary foundation is now a bi-pedal one and there has been a continuous adjustment and readjustment to forces upon us. Each step we take sends ‘shock waves’ through our body and the ability of our ‘foundation’ to adapt has a direct consequence to our health and well-being. Our feet are marvels of architecture and function. Misalignment of their bones can have a profound effect on posture. Conversely, foot problems may be a sign of strain passed down from elsewhere…spine, pelvis, hips, and knees for instance. In module 3 we will examine the dynamic anatomy of the bones, fascia, muscles and joints of our support mechanisms. Participants will learn numerous techniques to relieve pain, restore proper alignment and remove restrictions that limit movement.
In this workshop several modalities including neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, strain / counterstrain, osteopathy, and our own TraumaPractik will be taught. You will learn numerous techniques for the release of the fascia, muscles, and joints, of nerve entrapment and compression, of scar tissue and other restrictions. These techniques are excellent for back and hip pain, shin splints, runners knee, IT band issues, sciatica, numerous pelvis issues and gait imbalances. Course Outline
This is an in-depth workshop that will enhance any manual therapists’ success. Participants will learn effective techniques for treating concussions, head trauma, whiplashes, migraines, dizziness, nausea, balance issues, tinnitus, falls and impacts, temporo-mandibular joint problems, sequellae of MVAs, and more.
The course includes a detailed illustrated manual, an excellent reference toolbox for techniques and related anatomy
Over the 36 hours of teaching we will:
- Present an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the dural system and cranium and examine their structure and function.
- Discuss theories of the heart and gut brains, the electromagnetic field (torus) around us, and their importance in healing.
- Learn about the theories of consciousness and cellular memory.

You will learn techniques for:
- Measuring the cranium and other landmarks.
- A system of compression/decompression for the dural and nervous system to calm the systems and restore homeostasis
- Releasing the cranial sutures.
- Palpating the cranial rhythm throughout the body
- Release of the muscles of the face, the throat, the neck.
- A nine-step procedure designed to open the cranial venous system and restore vitality.
This is a four-day ‘hands on’ intensive taught in a retreat setting. Due to the nature of the subject material and in order to provide adequate individual attention, the class size is limited to twelve. It is designed with professional health care workers in mind yet it can also accommodate those with an intense desire to learn.
I highly recommend any of the modules offered in the Anatomy of Trauma series to manual therapists that want quality techniques and knowledge that can be applied to treatment your first day back.
I look forward to taking more as well as repeating those already completed.
Jennifer Spak RMT, DOMP
